High/Low: Stacked Shelving System, Muuto vs

Urban Outfitters Edition

It’s been 10 years since Muuto introduced its whimsical and highly versatile Stacked Shelving System, designed by Julien De Smedt of JDS Architects. Since then, new colors have been added, as have new accessories like sound-absorbing panels (in 2016) and a podium base (in 2012). Also on the market now: a knockoff of the stacked cubby look from Urban Outfitters.

Above: You can find Muuto Stacked Shelving System units at DWR or Danish Design Store. Think of the units as building blocks with which to construct your ideal storage solution. They come in a multitude of colors and are available with or without a door or a backboard, both of which are also offered in a range of colors. Prices start at $139 for the small open white version and go up to $319 for the large walnut unit with door at DWR. Above: Muuto introduced its four-legged podium base so that cubbies can be raised off the floor. They can also sit directly on the floor or be easily mounted to the wall. The Stacked Shelving System Podium is $239.00 to $296.65 at Design Within Reach. Above: You can opt for a multicolored configuration or go monochromatic, like with this all-walnut stained version. Each module comes with one clip. You can also buy a Set of 5 Clips in different colors for $29 at DWR.

Low

Above: There are far fewer options with Urban Outfitters’ Modular Stacking Storage System. Each set comes with three open cubbies, one of each size, for $179. And the only color available is the light brown shown here. Above: Each Urban Outfitters set comes with two clips. Ready to find more high/low ideas?
