I have it on the back of my wooden bedroom door which is not painted but stained. It has left no marks so far and I suppose it only would if I rubbed it back and forth. I like it a lot and recommend it highly.

It could. It's a powder coated metal so it's smooth, but if you were to move it around a lot then I have no doubt that it could damage the paint. That being said, no damage so far over here.

It has not for me. But it could if you put things on and off it a lot. It is just metal against the door. The metal is finished and has no rough edges but if you moved it around some it would eventually mar the paint. The door that I use it on is an all wood door with no paint but it has not scratch the wood in any way. I hope this helps.

This completely scratched off the paint on my door and the frame around the door, and I didn't even have anything hanging from it yet. It just happened over the period of about 4 days. & I live an apartment, so now I'm going to have to pay for the paint repair.
