Head back to the future, with Mitchell Wines

admin

Just like the Back To The Future trilogy, the Kinsfolk range by Mitchell Wines is the perfect love child of the past, present and future.

Headed up by the third generation of the Mitchell family grape growers and winemakers from the iconic Clare Valley region, this progressive range will reel you in, hook, line and sinker.

The past

Jump into our DeLorean… two generations ago, Peter McNicol Mitchell paved the way, farming the land and showing his son, Andrew, the ropes so he could take over the family farm and establish Mitchell Wines back in 1975.

With the talented Jane by Andrew’s side, the Mitchells have set the bar high, with vinos that are internationally touted for being drinkable in their youth and able to age gracefully. If you’re somehow a stranger to their magic, a bottle of their iconic Watervale Riesling or Peppertree Shiraz has never failed us on any occasion — give it a whirl.

Years after travelling the globe and forging their own impressive careers in the industry, Andrew and Jane’s brood — Angus, Edwina and Hilary — are back in Clare with families of their own. This sets the present scene with the sun now rising on the third generation’s progressive range, aptly named Kinsfolk.

The present

New range, who dis? Super drinkable, with enough complexity to entice those who know wine, and those of us who just know we LIKE wine, the Kinsfolk range is inclusive of most palates — the young, the old and the restless!

Much like the Mitchell clan members, these small-batch wines from single vineyards each have a distinct personality which will do a little dance on your tongue.

Kinsfolk Riesling 2017

Don’t expect a traditional crisp Clare Valley style of Riesling here. The team only make one barrel of this off-dry baby each year, and it showcases purity with layers of flavours that make us feel like we’re bathing in pure sunshine — including bright, floral, soft, musk sticks, citrus, candied grapefruit. Perfect with sweet and sour dishes, so think spicy Asian or smoked fish… yum!

Kinsfolk Gruner Veltliner 2017

This balanced and silky-smooth wine will have your mouth watering with notions of tart lime, stewed pear, apple crumble and toasty oak flavours. Pop it with your fave bowl of Vietnamese goodness, fried food or soft cheeses.

Kinsfolk Grenache 2017

Next time you’re noshing on pizza, grilling meat on the barbie, or sinking into a Charcuterie board, open a bottle of this delightful Grenache. With notes of French oak, spice on the palate, it has a depth of flavour and the perfect balance of fruit and acid that will round out your feast perfectly.

Kinsfolk Shiraz 2015

This bright Shiraz is balanced, with hints of cherry sauce and spice. It’s the perfect accompaniment to your hearty beef stew, grilled veggies, mushrooms or hard cheese… and if you’re like us, that’s all in the one sitting!

Even the bottle labels have a creative nod to the intertwined generations. Designed by Brady & Co, in collaboration with Brand Warrior Communications and Brendan Homan Photography, they feature a still photo which showcases a collection of the Mitchell family heirlooms, fresh flowers and fruits to represent the family, past and present, and the varietal characters of each wine. We love this extra meaning and they look gorgeous to boot.

Get into the Kinsfolk crew!

With only small quantities of these delicious wines being released, they’re usually only available at the Mitchell Wines cellar door in Clare or online. Getting to know good wine doesn’t need to break the bank, with these tasty treats retailing for between $30-$40 — but we’re making it even easier, with this exclusive offer … get 20% off EVERYTHING for the next week, online and cellar door, using the code word: ADELADY.

The future

With their solid foundation of top-quality wines and desire to innovate, the sky’s the limit for the Mitchell crew. They’re constantly learning from what’s been done so well by Peter, Andrew and Jane in the past and are continually improving the way they bring their beautiful wines to our tables, with a focus on sustainability and eliminating nasty chemicals in growing the grapes.

Things are heading in the right direction but we can’t WAIT for our next trip to the picturesque Clare Valley so we can stop in at their dreamy cellar door. The historic cellar door has been there since the 1890s and is surrounded by a tranquil garden that will have you unwinding within seconds. Add a glass of any of their beautiful wines, a platter of local produce and Bob’s your uncle, so tuck that blissful thought in your back pocket.

Past, present, future… Mitchell Wines have got it covered in spades and we can’t wait to continue on the adventure with them!
